Over the years, I’ve spoken with many people about their skin care frustrations. You all have the same questions. What strikes me is – not much has changed in skin care education in all this time.
There is still a huge lack of educational information about skin care, but no shortage of beauty products and product reviews! As a biochemist by training and licensed esthetician, I am deeply bothered when bad information is spread.
The problem is, skin care isn’t commonly studied, and we don’t learn this in school. For those of you who didn’t study a biological science, you may not have a good understanding of how skin works. It is therefore very hard to make informed decisions about what products to use and routines to follow. Even for me, having studied it for many years, treating skin is complex and challenging.
Today, the field of skin care is more exciting than ever. With rapid advances in our understanding of skin science and epigenetics, there’s been an explosion of new products and treatment possibilities, and there is much more to come. I’ll be sharing what I know and discover with you. Skin care, which bridges medicine and the beauty industry, is headed toward the medical side, as we gain more knowledge of how skin works at a cellular level.
My Philosophy
More than ever before, we need to understand how skin works. Let’s focus on skin first. Then we can talk about what to put on it. What we’re doing today is the opposite. We buy products without having a clue about our skin type and what’s going on inside our skin. You can’t make a good decision if you don’t know why your skin is behaving a certain way.
So let’s remember — Skin First, then Products. This is my core philosophy.
My Mission
You’ve come to an educational site where you will find expert skin care information grounded in science. On this blog and my social media accounts, my goal is to share my knowledge with you – to empower you with the information to make smart decisions about your products, routines, and skin treatments.
I try to explain the ‘science’ behind skin care – why you do or don’t do things a certain way – in simple terms. This is the kind of information that I think is important but lacking. I also share practical advice and professional tips.
Finally, if you’re interested in anti-aging, then you’ve come to the right place! This is my favorite topic and where I tend to get more advanced on the site.

About this Blog
First, this blog is dedicated solely to skin care. Just skin care. No makeup, hair, fragrance, or fashion. Skin is complicated enough already. The industry is growing by leaps and bounds these days. We need to focus, and I’ll be going deep on this subject.
Second, this blog will only discuss non-medical skin conditions. In other words, the cosmetic side of skin care. I will not cover serious medical conditions or diseases for which you would go see a physician.
Third, I live in the U.S. and therefore most of this blog will refer to U.S. products, companies, trends, and regulations. But when possible, I’ll highlight great products and developments from other countries.
About Me
I’ve been studying skin care for a long time. And over the years, I’ve acquired a store of knowledge on the science of skin, products & ingredients, skin analysis, and treating skin hands-on.
- Biochemistry & Molecular Biology degree
- dermatology lab research at Harvard Medical School and Shiseido’s Cutaneous Biology Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital; bench lab research at the National Institutes of Health (Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute)
- licensed in esthetics with clinical experience treating skin – giving skin consultations, analyzing skin, designing protocols, performing facial & body spa treatments, recommending products & routines
What I Love About Skin Care
Like many of you, I love discovering and trying new products. But my favorite part of skin care is the science—the anatomy and physiology of skin, the study of skin conditions, and the mechanisms of aging.
Skin fascinates me because understanding it requires a knowledge of multiple sciences — biology, chemistry, medicine, even physics. It is a tough organ to study, partly because many variables affect it at a cellular level, and most of what is happening cannot be seen. Not to mention, skin is always changing, which complicates everything ten-fold. It is a great big puzzle that I am eager to see us solve.
My other favorite topics are skin analysis, cutting edge ingredients & formulations, and beauty devices.

I LOVE your blog, I truly do. I will be reading EVERY word you print on the blog…I ‘ve wondered, asked, and forgotten about which sunscreen goes over, above, in, on, below, around (!) the serums, moisturizes, etc. Your instructions are perfect.
