Cleansing oils that come in a solid (gel or balm) and melt into oil when rubbed into skin.
Some of you asked me about the Sarah Chapman’s cleansing balm yesterday. Here’s what I love about it:
1. Easy rubbing – there isn’t too much friction, so little drag across skin, doesn’t dry up if you do a short massage. Best rub though is Banila Zero’s balm (shown with pink cap), which is EFFORTLESS.
2. Melts into an oil quickly
3. Emulsifies well (as soon as it makes contact with water)
4. Rinses off well – no residue
5. It feels good! Mild scent too.
Notice anything unusual about her packaging? The cleanser is in an airless pump container! I love it when brands package their products in the cleanest, most sterile way possible. That’s why I also like the tube packaging of Nude and Eve Lom.

Hi Rita!
Thanks so much for the follow up post 🙂 Definitely moving up Sarah Chapman up on my list of things to buy once I use up some items. In case you’ve used the Tatcha Camellia Oil cleanser, how is the Sarah Chapman or the Banila one in comparison? I’m using Tatcha currently, and love it, but always looking for better products to buy next 😉
Much love,
Ruhi
Hi Ruhi!
That’s an interesting question – I love cleansing oils and talking about them 🙂
Tatcha’s oil takes some time (at least 5-10 seconds) to get sliding. To me, this is a long time. The ideal oil should start moving around the face right away. (Precleanse does that, which is one reason I love it so much.) With Tatcha, if you don’t use enough oil or give it enough time to start moving, it will feel dry on skin (you feel resistance). On oily or combo skin, this may not be an issue. On normal-dry skin, this is. Tatcha’s oil is thinner than Precleanse. Some people prefer a lighter oil; I actually prefer a medium-weight one.
Sarah Chapman begins to move as soon as the gel (not a traditional gel, more like paste) is rubbed in. The gel turns into an oil after you start rubbing. On this count, I like it better than Tatcha. It doesn’t move around as easily as Precleanse, but the thicker consistency of this gel is nice if you’re feeling dry. You can massage your face while rubbing this in. It’s actually a good product to use if you want to do a massage. (So is Precleanse.) One other thing – the oil is richer than Tatcha’s – I’m not sure how your combo skin would feel about that.
Banila is amazing. It has wonderful spread. It is incredibly easy to move this around. Turns into an oil right away. Emulsifies so well, when rinsed off, skin is very clean. By far, the best solid balm I have tried. The texture of Banila reminds me of a silicone primer (odd for a balm but it works!). It’s very easy to scoop out of its jar too, unlike many balms that are hard. I recommend you try this sometime!
All three leave skin feeling clean. Thank you for writing in, so nice to hear from you!
