Did you know – SPF isn’t just for skincare and makeup. Clothing and accessories can have ‘spf’ protection. It’s called UPF fabric. Think of it as sunscreen for fabric.
The fabrics are treated by UVR absorbers (built-in UVB +UVA protection). They are labeled with a UPF rating. Go for the highest UPF you can find (UPF 50 or over).
UPF fabrics are such an easy way to give yourself added protection. Unlike a sunscreen slathered onto your face, there is no additional discomfort from choosing a higher UPF. But you should still wear sunscreen on your face. The hat is extra protection. Remember UV is powerful – sunscreen alone doesn’t stop all the UV damage.
These 2 hats are UPF50. I always try to buy UPF sun hats whenever possible. It’s easier to find on outdoor clothing. Like this hiking hat by Columbia Sportswear (bottom hat).
Note the darker color on the lining of the inside brim. That’s good! Darker colors absorb UV. So UV rays are less likely to reflect and bounce back onto your face.
