This is the ‪‎umbrella‬ that saved my skin today.

I had to walk a long time in the sun. The sun was brutally intense, and there was no shade anywhere.

I carried this UV umbrella to keep my face and neck out of the sun. It kept my body much cooler too. My dark hair, which absorbs a lot of heat in the sun, didn’t overheat me either.

Using an umbrella may seem strange, and it might get you some stares. But sun umbrellas are becoming more common. In downtown D.C. here in the United States, no one will look twice at you if you’re carrying an umbrella on a sunny day. It’s not an oddity anymore.

I sometimes see men carrying one too! They’re smart. Skin cancer is most prevalent among white males over age 50 in the U.S.

What’s nice about this umbrella – it’s silver on the outside to reflect ‪UV, dark blue on the inside to absorb it (so the rays don’t reflect back into my face).

Some UV umbrellas are made of UPF fabric, which is fabric that has been pre-treated with UV absorbers. It’s “sunscreen” for fabric, giving you an extra layer of protection. If you have an opportunity to buy a UPF treated umbrella or hat, you should. It’s definitely worthwhile.

This umbrella is compact, folding to 6 inches. Very lightweight and fits easily into a bag.

This one came from Boots in Thailand. Boots is a UK drugstore chain. So the price of an umbrella like this is very affordable. Nothing out of reach about this, and yet it can do so much good for your skin!

You don’t need an umbrella exactly like this. Any umbrella is better than nothing. The most important thing is to keep your skin out of the sun and wear sunscreen.
