Sun and Vitamin D
Vitamin D is Essential for Skin
Although sun damages skin, we still need sunshine to make Vit D, a vital mineral for bone health. The skin synthesizes Vit D when exposed to the sun. Sunscreen blocks skin from Vit D production.
Additionally, melanin production is part of the skin’s natural defense system against UV. The skin produces melanin when exposed to the sun. When the melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) have been inactive for a long period of time, they become less responsive when they are needed by the skin.
A deficiency of Vitamin D has been linked to many diseases and health problems.
So, bottom line, we still need sunshine in our life.
Wearing Sunscreen vs Getting Sunshine is a Trade-Off
Wearing sunscreen to prevent skin damage and getting enough sunshine for Vit D production is a tough balancing act. I don’t think there are any clear answers. This is a decision you need to make with a doctor, who can first tell you whether you’re vulnerable to Vit D deficiency.
The amount of time you need to spend in the sun to get enough Vit D isn’t a straightforward answer. It depends on your skin type, where you’re located, day of the year, time of day, age, pollution, and other factors. You can read more about Vit D on the Vitamin D Council blog.
We can also obtain Vit D through supplementation. A standard blood test in a physical exam can measure your Vit D levels. If you are deficient and don’t get much sun exposure, your doctor may suggest prescription or OTC Vit D supplements.
