Before we dive into anti-aging strategies, let’s first understand what aging is.

You know what aging looks like on your face and how it makes your body feel. But what is aging exactly? Let’s understand this, so we know how to treat it.

In simple terms, aging is losing all the important stuff (DNA, proteins, enzymes). And abnormal stuff taking its place. How we age is determined by how well we repair damaged DNA. If we don’t repair DNA well, we age faster.

There are 2 kinds of aging: Intrinsic and Extrinsic.

Intrinsic aging is genetic aging or chronological aging. It is genetically programmed from birth, and we can’t change it. This is about 10% of the aging process and starts to show up around age 60.

Extrinsic aging is environmental aging or lifestyle aging. This is about 90% of the aging process and starts to show up around age 30. This we can control by our lifestyle habits, like protecting our skin from the sun.

Genetic aging and Environmental aging look different. For instance, skin thins out with genetic aging. But it thickens with environmental aging.

Environmental aging is why a young person can look much older for her age, and vice versa. Your lifestyle – what you eat and drink, whether you smoke, how much time you spend in the sun, whether you’re stressed, and other lifestyle factors — has a great influence on how you age.

There are various theories for why we age – they are different mechanisms of aging. I’ll be going over each of them because to fight aging effectively, you need to address them all, not just one.
