What do aloe, chamomile, green tea, licorice, and oatmeal all have in common?
These household items are some of the most popular botanical anti-inflammatory ingredients used in skin care products.
And they’re all derived from plants. Most anti-inflammatory ingredients are botanicals (derived from plants or algae).
You should look for anti inflammatory ingredients in skin care products if you fall into one of these groups:
- You want to slow down aging
- You have sensitive skin
- You have rosacea
- You have acne
- You are currently experiencing irritated skin (redness, dryness, flakiness, stinging, or burning)
All of these conditions are caused by inflammation.
Chronic inflammation accelerates aging, and it is ongoing. So for fighting aging, tackling it daily is far better than once in a while (or never).
Even better, look for products that combine Antioxidants + Anti-Inflammatory Ingredients. The antioxidants will quench the free radicals that trigger inflammation in the first place.
On skin care product labels, botanicals are almost always written in their Latin name. Sometimes the English word is provided next to the Latin name in parentheses. For example:
Aloe –> Aloe barbendisis (aloe)
Chamomile –> Matricaria recutita (chamomile)
Green Tea –> Camellia sinensis (green tea)
Licorice –> Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice)
Oat –> Avena sativa (oat)
